NEVER BEFORE HAS THE ABILITY TO CONNECT WITH PEOPLE FROM OTHER PLACES, AND TO HAVE A TRUE UNDERSTANDING OF WHERE THEY'RE COMING FROM, BEEN A NECESSARY AND ESSENTIAL SKILL FOR STUDENTS AND ADULTS ALIKE....
It is important to plant a love a of travel in our children, and help them feel at ease while traveling too......
Here are some tips...
Place a globe or world map somewhere visible in the home, where the children interact several times a day. pick out locations on the map from their favorite movie or bedtime story, and help them locate it on the map. Trace a line from your house to the destination on the map. Talk about the weather, the people, the history, anything that will help them identify with that place.
Have a long term travel plan, allowing children to look forward to and learn about the places they will be traveling in the next few years to come. This not only serves to create a connection and an excitement to travel to that destination, but also serves to teach them about planning and saving as well.
Have children help in trip planning, get city or local maps of the area where you are traveling to, learn about the currency, the indigenous crops in the area, as well as what the people eat locally. Sometimes it helps to tell them some foods that are similar to what they are accustomed to, and then tell them about the nastiest thing they eat locally, and say,"but we won't be trying any of that we will stay clear of that." This often makes them feel more comfortable about trying new foods and new things.
When Traveling, teach your kids what the signs means at the airport and on the roads. Start by showing them at home and getting them familiar with the common signs used where they live, then upon arrival at your destination begin seeking signs and comparing them to the ones at home. This teaches them how to read universal imagery, as well sight words in both languages.
The most important lesson a parent can give is modeling good global citizen behavior!
